The Truth About Wanting: Are You Willing to Do What It Takes?

There are things you say you want. But are you actually willing to do what it takes to get them?

This isn’t a rare problem—it’s everywhere. Most people “want” things, but would never follow through on what’s required to achieve them. As a result, most of us stay more or less where we are. We might fluctuate a little over time, but fundamentally, we don’t change.

Why We Stay Stuck

You want to lose weight, but you don’t like being hungry or working out.
You want love, but you don’t like dating, and nobody feels good enough.
You want more freedom, more money, or a different career, but you stay where you are.
You want to get out of debt, but your spending habits don’t change.
You want to save for the future, but vacations feel more important right now.
You want a clutter-free home, but you keep buying more things.
You need to go to the doctor or dentist, but you’re “too busy.”

The list could go on forever.

We often prefer talking about what we need to do—or complaining about it—instead of actually doing it. It’s easier to criticize ourselves than to commit to consistent action.

The Problem With “Just Do It”

It sounds simple. But if it were that simple, you would have already done it. So clearly, there’s more to the story.

Taking action can be frustrating, especially when it doesn’t immediately work. You invest time, energy, and sometimes money—and when results don’t come, it can feel like you’ve moved even further away from your goal.

What Success Actually Requires

Success requires four things:

  • Persistence
  • Willingness
  • Creativity
  • Community

When you stay focused and are willing to keep trying—adjusting your approach along the way—one of three things will happen:

  • You’ll decide you don’t actually want the goal anymore.
  • You’ll achieve it.
  • You’ll end up somewhere different, but still valuable.

What You Can Do About It

Get Started

If you’re ready to go for it, commit fully. Give yourself a realistic timeline—six months, maybe a year. Accept that there will be ups and downs. But make a decision: you’re starting, and you’re staying with it.

Get Help

You’re not meant to do everything alone. Whether it’s a friend, mentor, therapist, accountability partner, or community—ask for support. Accept help. Keep asking for it when you need it.

Get Real

There’s another option: stop talking about goals you’re not willing to pursue.

You can always decide later that you will take action. But for now, let it go. Constantly talking about what you want without acting on it creates stress, frustration, and a sense of helplessness—for you and the people around you.

If you’re not going to act, don’t complain.

You’ll be surprised how much mental space that frees up—and how much more you can actually accomplish.

Ready to Finally Do What It Takes?

If you’re tired of just wanting things and are ready to actually follow through, you don’t have to do it alone.

A self-described messy kid with "lots of potential" she never seemed to live up to, Leah spent her first decade in business as a Professional Organizer specializing in hoarders threatened with eviction in New York City. She learned, very tangibly, how to help people cut what they don't need, get clear on what they do, and make change that actually lasts — even for the people everyone else had given up on.

Today she brings that same framework to ADHDish entrepreneurs — helping them build businesses that work in their weird and wild way.
